The Canadian Border Is Now Open!
Here is what you need to know
Well, the border is finally reopening for US citizens to make their long awaited trips. This page will advise you on how to cross the border successfully. I will keep it short as you need to read and act on everything I'm providing.
As you have likely read, everyone entering Canada at this time must be fully vaccinated for Covid-19 with one of the approved vaccines; Moderna, Pfizer, AstraZeneca, or Johnson & Johnson. You will need to bring a copy of your invoice with 7 Lakes to prove your destination. They will require a quarantine plan in the event you become sick with Covid-19. We suggest booking the Crown and Anchor motel or some other motel in Geraldton to satisfy the requirements. You will need a molecular Covid-19 test taken within 72 hours of your border crossing. To be clear, you cannot use the test you can buy at a pharmacy even though Border Services is telling people they can when they call. That is an antigen test, and you need a molecular test. You will need to make an appointment for this test at your local clinic. Remember, it must be within 72 hours of entering Canada and my experience is that results are not the same day so make it clear to the testing people at the clinic what the requirements are. Make sure to schedule your test to allow proper time for results and your travels to Canada. Anything less than a full molecular test will not be accepted at the border and you will not be allowed to enter. Bring your vaccination card, as it is required. I put mine right in my passport as I believe it will be required to travel anywhere in the world for the foreseeable future. Bring a mask as it is required at the border and in any public setting in Canada.
Be careful when downloading this app. I suggest not downloading or completing it until you are within five business days of travel to Canada. When I arrived with mine completed along with other requirements, immigration would not accept it even though I had a receipt from the federal government giving me exemption from the quarantine laws. They said I downloaded the wrong one. I asked, "Is there more than one?" They said there are multiple versions and you need to download the latest one. Apparently, the app doesn't upgrade automatically, so you need to manually download the latest version right before you travel to Canada. They ordered me into a 14-day quarantine and I am now two weeks behind schedule with my work. Do not make this mistake. If you don't have a smartphone I believe you can download the ArriveCAN app to your laptop or iPad which you will need with you to cross.
Requirements to enter Canada
Here is a list of requirements to enter Canada:
- You must be fully vaccinated with a Health Canada approved vaccine. (Moderna, Pfizer, AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD, or Johnson & Johnson (one dose))
- You must provide Covid-19 related information electronically through the ArriveCAN app or web portal including proof of vaccination that meets the pre-entry testing requirements prior to departing for Canada.
- You must be asymptomatic upon arrival and have a paper or digital copy of your vaccination documentation in English or French (or certified translation along with the original) ready to show a government official on request.
- You may be subjected to participate in random self-testing.
All travelers must present a suitable quarantine plan, and be prepared to quarantine should you not meet all the conditions to be exempt from quarantine.
I look forward to seeing old friends again and meeting new ones when you arrive. Safe travels!
